Design
The battery is the same, as in-camera charging from the supplied MicroUSB charger and lead. Bit weird that in 2019, it’s not USB-C, but that’s a minor point. The A6100 also adds a microphone input, which the original never had. Another welcome addition is the flip-up and over the screen, which makes it ideal for selfies. It’s also now a touchscreen, which, while you can’t navigate the menus with it (and you wouldn’t want to), you can select focus points and zoom and pan to review pictures.
Photography
Again, all excellent improvements. While the megapixel count is pretty much the same, the world has moved on from determining how good a camera is by its megapixel count; there are factors that are far more critical. The A6100 has the latest Sony BIONZ X image-processing engine, and it produces great-looking results. Focusing speed is breakneck, much faster than the original, and the PDAF focus points increased threefold. All this adds up to a substantial performance boost in picture quality and the number of “keepers.”
