As you can see, Nikon made every effort to impress on the 24-70mm f/4 S, including a fluorine-coated front element to repel moisture and an STM motor for near-silent focus. The lens also weighs just 500 g. That compares well to the 1070 g F-mount Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8E VR, as well as the 710 g 24-120mm f/4G VR.
Interestingly, Nikon decided to keep the names of the lenses for the Z mount relatively simple. As explained in our article about Nikon Z lenses, the naming convention is going “NIKKOR Z” followed by the focal length and maximum aperture, along with the indication of the lens grade. If the same lens named the old way, it would have been something like “AF-P NIKKOR 24-70mm f/4 S ED.” We are happy to see Nikon move towards these more straightforward labels.
Reviews of Nikon Z6 + NIKKOR Z 24-70 mm f/4 S Kit
The viewfinder is spectacular – the XT2s was right, this is even better. Better to shoot through a viewer, and this is as good as it gets. If you are a DSLR user, who thinks an optical finder will always be better
Operating the camera is fantastic. It feels like an evolution of everything Nikon has learned about camera interfaces. The touchscreen works well, but to be honest, the combination of physical controls and menus is so intuitive.
Everything is so easy to customize, from the short cut menu to the U1/2/3 profiles and the “my menu”, it allows you to concentrate on taking photos and not digging around in menus.
The back button focus – this works tremendously well. It is horrible on the XT2 because tiny little button (which is also slightly in the wrong place), missing from the D750 (no dedicated AF on the badge), so delighted to see how well it has been implemented on the Z6.
When it comes to image quality, the jpegs are superb. The colours look great, if perhaps not as fabulous as the fuji (which has the best colours for every camera). It will impress by them in body stabilization – hand holding a 1/3 of a second with no shake is astonishing and is useful with a slower lens like an f4. The high iso performance is fantastic, and the iso 5000 is very usable.
