Product Description

Sony SEL85F14GM Full Frame, F1.4, G Master Lens Designed and built to the strictest precision standards, this lens offers magnificent imaging performance throughout the frame, right up to its widest F1.4 aperture setting. An XA (extreme aspherical) element with 0.01-micron surface precision contributes to previously unachievable resolution. And stunning bokeh for new expressive potential. Three ED glass elements support the lens’s superior resolving power by suppressing chromatic aberration and minimizing artificial coloration throughout its aperture range. Two position sensors enhance the accuracy of an SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive system for autofocus performance that fully supports the lens’s high-resolution capability. A focus mode switch, focus hold button, and aperture ring with switchable click stops provide professional control for a wide range of shooting situations. The camera’s zoom feature offers a higher magnification zoom by combining various zoom features.

Top reviews

The G Master Lens series by Sony is their top of the range and some of their most expensive lenses available, so as a hobbyist. I got stuck on whether to go for the  85mm F1.4  or  24-70mm F2.8  lens as I could only afford one, though, to be honest, both have received EXTREMELY positive reviews regarding building quality and performance. So there isn’t a wrong choice but more down to which one you would use more. It was such a tough choice; however, in the end, I decided to go for the 85mm, and so far, I have been thrilled with it.

The lens hood has an excellent rubber-like texture on the front which is great for gripping; in addition, there is a quick release button as it locks onto the lens, which is a very nice feature.

The included lens case is not your typical thin and soft leather pouch that typically comes with other Sony premium lenses (like the SEL90M28G lens); it’s an adorable textile soft case with decent padding and a shoulder strap! Very pleased indeed!

 ♦ Build Quality & In-Use ♦

If it’s one thing you can instantly tell when holding this lens is that it makes with quality in mind, it feels incredibly robust and, when mounted, feels stable when held. While this lens is heavier than my 556g A7M2 body, I didn’t have an issue regarding fatigue in my arms when using it for extended periods.

You will find a couple of buttons and switches located around the lens:

 – Focus Hold Button (Left side): Does what it states; once you’ve focused on something (AF), hold this button down, and it will lock focus, so you don’t have to half-press the shutter to focus again. A convenient feature when operating through auto-focus.
